A code ?orange? hazardous weather warning has been issued for eight districts in western and northern Bulgaria on January 16 because of the forecast for heavy snow and icy roads, the country?s meteorology institute said.

The areas affected are capital city Sofia and the Sofia district, as well Pernik, Kyustendil, Pazardjik, Lovech, Gabrovo and Veliko Turnovo districts; code ?orange? warnings are issued when weather conditions pose risk to health and property. Snow cover in those areas are expected to reach up to 15-20cm by evening.

A further 14 districts were issued a code ?yellow? weather warning: Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Rousse, Turgovishte, Shoumen, Razgrad, Silistra, Blagoevgrad, Smolyan, Kurdjali, Plovdiv and Stara Zagora. Code ?yellow? signifies potential risk of hazardous weather conditions.

Similar hazardous weather warnings are in effect throughout the Balkans, with parts of eastern Romania, southern Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia all under code ?orange? alert. Meanwhile, a code ?red? warning has been declared for Greece, where heavy thunderstorms are expected.
